I'm moving in November (or November-ish). We have a 'large dog.' She's about 45 lbs. That classifies her as 'large.' I'm looking online for apartments and houses to rent, especially with the Dog Friendly and Pets Welcome icons. I find some and they're nice. Nice enough to perk my interest. So I click on the ad and I notice-- under the pets okay? category: Inquire for Pet Policy. Okay, so I inquire about the pet policy. I have no problem paying a non-refundable pet fee, or a monthly pet fee. I'm even okay with paying BOTH. Well, the pet policy is no dogs allowed over 25 lbs.
I love all dogs, all cats, okay all animals except snakes. But seriously, how can you advertise Dog Friendly and ONLY allow small dogs? All dogs bark. All dogs poop, and its required to pick it up! There's no sign that says if your dogs poop is larger than... (you get the point). Any kind of dog, regardless of size, might have an accident on the floor.
Winnie doesn't bark incessantly, she 'goes' practically on command, she's been accident-free for 2 years and is crate trained!
Why are these places discriminating against my 'large' (even though I would describe her as medium) dog? UGH!! We might have to look into buying, even though we have no idea how long we'll be there.

That's probably the craziest thing I've heard today! Just tell them that she's an eye dog who rescued a bunch of kittens from drowning in a gutter

that's crazy! a dog is a dog regarless of the size. either you accept dogs or you dont! fight it!
2Peep, I NEVER understood this either. The only thing I can think of is that there may possibly be a clause in their own liability insurance. I know my homeowners insurance won't insure homes with certain breeds.
Otherwise, it makes no sense. Small dogs bark way more than big dogs and they have a harder time holding it for long periods.
3I always heard there was something in insurance policies about dogs over 30 lbs or bully breeds like pits and staffies. I never understood it either. I do understand the pit bull rules, but no big dogs at all is just a stupid rule. One of my dogs is 33 lbs. and I think it's dumb that I'd have to lie about his weight if I wanted to move.
4its probadly due to the fact that they think the larger dogs will be more wear and tear? perhaps, just tell them its medium dog or maybe if you find a place that you really like, show them the dog and see if they might change their mind and tell them how well behaved it is and that is is house broken, good luck, it really sucks when you have an animal and then its hard to find a place that will rent to you, been there done that, they are like kids to us.
5awww im sorry peepers...that is unfair and i dont see why they would really have policy like that in the first place. i mean especially when they allow some pets...i say except them or dont because atleast it will make it them easier to accept...instead of your dog being too big and them turning you down. i say all should accept them and if they have a problem at all then just charge the fee that any pet owner is really ok with paying as in the extra charge every month or the added bonus when you move in. im sorry peep but youre dog is too good for that place anyways!
6What I wound up doing last time I tried to move (but changed my mind and stayed) was offering a double pet deposit. I have small dogs, but I have two of them. It's just as hard with two small dogs as it is with one big one. If you get desperate you can always offer up double, or tell them you're willing to add on a monthy fee in your rent. Bring a picture when you check places out so they can see how cute they are. Pictures speak louder than words, I guess. Ultimately, the pictures are what sold people on my dogs.
7Sorry to hear all this peep, I was living in my apartment for 2 years before I got my dog and when I went to the humane society to adopt a dog they were all large breed dogs which I didn't care about but my apt complex has the same rule. I was so agravated because I was being honest about it and other people in my building had dogs that weighed alot more then 25 pounds more like 60-70 and they were not being told anything. Well I finally ended up leaving there anyway and ended up with a small dog but where I live now they have a weight limit of 30 pounds and there are really big dogs here so I really don't understand the whole thing....but maybe you could offer them an extra deposit.
8Awwww.....peep! That is so wrong! You are 100% right.....why should the weight of the dog matter?
9what about renting a house? dogs like yards and houses have those
10Val, I looked at that option too. But a lot of those are more upfront with the 'no pets' clearly stated. Also a lot of 'no smokers' too. Which makes more sense than the pet thing!!
11I'm sure everything will turn out fine, it's just one of those little things that when piled on a bunch of other little things irritates me.
That's ridiculous! I completely agree that the larger dogs are being descrimintated against. My lab is completely trained and hasn't had an accident since he was a puppy. However, my parents little fluff balls still occasionally have accidents! It just doesn't seem fair. good luck with it!
12That is Dogcrimination! or Dogcism.. not fair.
13It really is unfair. I've had little dogs & big dogs. In my experience, the little ones are A LOT more destructive than the big ones. We have a 100 pound Old English sheepdog right now, and we haven't had a bit of trouble out of him. I trust him enough that I'd take him anywhere.
14I heart wynter's dog
15hehe..thanks Jenna. I should post some pics of him for you
16Yup....I agree with you wynter. You should post some pics of the pup for me
17I put some up in your I HEART Brandon Walsh suite
18The pics are so ADORABLE, wynter! Thanks
19Your welcome.
Now, I have to drag myself away from pop so I clean up before my
parents get here. They're bringing my boys back - yay! (my parents 'kidnapped' them this weekend)
20Me too! I am outty
